Now that I think about it, I would say that PC era Touhou's darker tone was likely a product of common relevance tied to the platform it was associated with. PC-98 had a lot of dark games. Hentai shit especially. Cyberpunk horror even. Abandoning the crown genre of airborne shooters that NEC was known for on its console platforms (PC Engine and PC Engine CD / Turbografix-16 and Turbografix-CD). Touhou was strangely enough one of the few games on that computer keeping that style of gameplay alive. Interesting.

Always liked Kongara's design in the one game she appeared in. Edgy and dark. Just how I like my character designs. Honestly Modern Touhou feels less darker with its characters. Better games. But man! If those PC-98 characters aren't underrated in their design, then I don't know what. Seriously, this theme even compliments that. The darkest thing about modern Touhou designs is that the Reimu of today is a bit crankier than the seemingly more welcomed personality of PC-98 Touhou (I really wish someone would do an in depth 45 minute vid on that. Seems like it would be funny as hell). Yeah many characters are WAY darker than her. But just saying it to have fun.

If there is anything that I've truly come to respect about the manner in which Zun develops his music, its how much of a progressive heart he has to his compositions. A single loop of many iconic themes is actually lengthier than in most other games. And yet it's a blast to listen to. Rare quality of vg music. Especially today! The 90's was probably the most notable albeit still very elusive instance in which music was this nonlinear. Even in Euro-style games they kept it progressive, if you knew where to look. This modern ritual of literally unoriginal licensed music in an original game that doesn't even compliment it's intended atmosphere most times needs a lesson in identity. Well at least Japan is still the most traditional about this.
